Creation of the Universe – Day Seven of God’s Creation

  • Genesis 2:1-3, “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

The Bible states that God finished his creation of the universe, and he rested on the seventh day Creation of the Universe - The Seventh Day was ordained for Rest.and sanctified it. Did the Lord rest because he was weary? Absolutely not. The Bible is very clear that the Lord, the Creator of all things, never gets faint or weary. He doesn’t slumber or sleep. (Isaiah 40:28, Psalms 121:2-4) If God doesn’t get tired or weary, then why did he rest?

Creation of the Universe: Gave God Pleasure in His Work

First, God wanted to take pleasure in his creation. (Revelation 4:11) Have you ever painted a picture or completed a project that you wanted to take time to enjoy? Most of us have at one time or another. Why did you take the time? Because the completion of the project gave you pleasure.

Much as a person enjoys his completed artwork, or his completed project, so also the Creator of all creativity enjoyed his creation of the universe in its pristine condition.

God’s example shows us that we are to enjoy the work of our hands. He encourages us to do what we do with all our might. God gives us the good of our own labor to enjoy. That is our portion in this life. God gives us the work of our hands to give joy and fulfillment. (Ecclesiastes 5:18)

Creation of the Universe: God Provides Separation and Protection

Enjoying his creation of the universe is not the only reason that God rested on the seventh day. God rested the seventh day and used it as an example for men. He sanctified it for man’s sake. (Mark 2:27) When God rested the seventh day he declared a separation between work and rest. God’s principle of separation and protection applies even to the day of rest.

Creation of the Universe – Day Seven of God’s Creation: A Fore-shadowing of Resting in Christ

The sabbath day of rest is a foreshadowing of resting in Jesus Christ. It is an example for believers in Christ Jesus.

How can the Christian know that God provides rest? The covenant that God makes with believers is the greatest evidence of God’s provision for rest.

In the Covenant, (promise), God makes with his followers he guarantees several things, (Hebrews 8:10-12):

First, God guarantees that he will put his laws into our hearts and into our minds. This means that Christ’s follower does not have to strive to learn about God and his ways. If he will seek the Lord with all his heart through God’s word, the Bible, God will reveal himself in amazing ways.

Second, He states that those who trust in him will be his people and he will be their God. This means that Christ has separated them for his particular blessing. He will never forsake them or leave them. He is attentive to their prayers, and he watches over them. They are his people and the apple of his eye.

Third, He states that all his followers will know him from the least to the greatest. The Christian does not need an interceder between him and Christ. Christ himself will teach him through his Holy Spirit. God is not a respecter of persons. What he teaches one of his children he will teach all of his children. The believer only has to seek him diligently through his word.

Finally, He states that he will be merciful to the believer, and he will not count his sin against him. The Christian is freed from his own sin and iniquity. The Christian can celebrate his salvation without the burden of sin.

Those who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior can enter into God’s rest. Faith in Jesus Christ, his redemptive work on the cross, and his resurrection from death are enough to please God.

The Christian is not required to do great works to please God. Simple obedience is all that is required of the believer. The Christian is freed from the burden of producing his own works of righteousness. Jesus Christ has secured the believer’s sanctification for him.

Creation of the Universe – Day Seven of God’s Creation: God’s Rest is Eternal

Resting in Christ does not end in this world. Jesus gives his followers a glimpse into heaven itself to reveal the rest that he provides after death. (Luke 16:19-31) Those who die in Christ are taken to Abraham’s bosom to be comforted. Death for the Christian is not a fearful thing.

Those believers in Christ who have gone before us are being completely comforted. There is no pain or suffering for the believer in Christ. God continues his principle of separation and protection even in the death of a believer.

Creation of the Universe – Day Seven of God’s Creation: Resting In Christ

Resting in Christ frees the Christian from fear of death and the things of this world. (Hebrews 2:14-15) Resting in Christ means that God never leaves the Christian nor forsakes him. He is forever secure. But true rest in God is knowing that Christ provides everything we need for this world and the one to come. Whatever trial comes our way. Whatever burden we carry. Christ is there to comfort and share that burden. Resting in Christ is the only way to true joy and fulfillment
