Greatest Prophet in the Bible?
Who Was the Greatest Prophet in the Bible?
Have you ever wondered which prophet was the greatest prophet in the Bible? Who would you name, and why did you select him?
Would you select the greatest prophet in the Bible for his great miracles?
Maybe you’d select the greatest prophet in the Bible on great feats that he accomplished. You might select the greatest prophet in the Bible on his military might. Maybe you selected the greatest prophet on his unwavering faith. Most of us may have differing opinions on the matter. Moses is a great selection; David is also a good choice. Samuel, Elijah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel would also be front runners.
The Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Revealed
You might be surprised to learn that none of those great prophets mentioned above is the greatest prophet in the Bible. The greatest prophet in the Bible is John the Baptist. Don’t look at me. I didn’t say it. Jesus did…and I’m sure he knows. Jesus states very clearly that John the Baptist is the greatest prophet in the Bible.
- Luke 7:28, “For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”
- Matthew 11:11, “Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there is not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”
Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Why was John Special?
What makes John so special? He didn’t do any miracles or great feats. Why was he the greatest prophet in the Bible?
- John 10:41-42, “And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. And many believed on him there.”
- John 1:6-9, “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”
- John 1:29-34, “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me. And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.”
What did John do that makes him the greatest prophet in the Bible? He is the prophet that revealed Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to the world. It is his testimony that Jesus is the Son of God that makes him the greatest prophet in the Bible.
Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Others Greater than John?
Why does Jesus say, “…but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.” (Luke 7:28)
Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Who is Greater?
When a person gives his life to Christ, Jesus performs a transformation in the believer.
- Titus 3:4-6, “But after the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which is shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour.”
Jesus takes the old heart of unbelief out of the believer and puts a new sinless heart in him. He then puts his Holy Spirit in him. Ezekiel and David confirm this witness.
- Ezekiel 11:19-20, “And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, And will give them a heart of flesh: That they may walk in my statutes, and keep mine ordinances, and do them: and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
- Psalms 51:10-13, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.”
When Jesus Christ takes the sinful heart out of man and puts his holy spirit within that man he gives him the ability to witness for Christ. Jesus testifies that each believer has the ability to witness for him. It is the indwelling Holy Ghost that gives the believer a greater witness than the greatest prophet in the Bible.
- Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Is there a reward for witnessing?
What is the reward for those that keep God’s Word, the Bible, and testify for Jesus
- Revelation 3:8, 10-12, “I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name…” “…Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown. Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.”
Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Believers in Christ
Those who keep God’s word and testify for Jesus will receive great rewards. It is my desire that all Christians would realize their true destiny and give themselves totally to Christ.
- Revelation 19:10, “…for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
Greatest Prophet in the Bible: Non-Believers
It is also my desire that those who don’t know Jesus may repent of their sins and accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior that they too may be partakers of God’s great blessing.
- Romans 10:8-10, “But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
- Romans 10:13, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
