The Fall of Man – Woman and Marriage
The Fall of Man – Woman and Marriage: Woman Created
What type of condition prevailed when God created woman from Adam’s rib before the fall of man? The Woman was created in a perfect, sinless, loving environment. That is God’s desire for marriage.
- Genesis 2:21-25, “And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he
slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man made he a woman, and brought her unto to the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
The Fall of Man – Woman and Marriage: An Analogy of Christ and the Church
To understand how the Lord God created everything from himself, a person need only look at the manner in which he separated man’s rib and created the woman. The woman was created in a world of love and sinless perfection, much as the church, the bride of Christ, is created in Christ’s sinless perfect love.
- Ephesians 5:25-33, “Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless, let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.”
It is obvious that marriage is one of the biggest witnesses of the Church of Christ. God makes it very clear that one of the most godly acts that a man can do is to cherish and give himself for his wife.
The Fall of Man – Woman and Marriage: Mistreating Wives
Any man who deals treacherously with his wife is not pleasing to God. One need only look at Malachi 2:11-16, to see the seriousness of mistreating a wife. God fully intends a man and his wife to be one in the flesh and loving one to another.
- Malachi 2:11-16, “Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the LORD which he loved, and hath married the daughter of a strange god.
- The LORD will cut off the man that doeth this, the master and the scholar, out of the tabernacles of Jacob, and him that offereth an offering unto the LORD of hosts.
- And this have ye done again, covering the altar of the LORD with tears, with weeping, and with crying out, insomuch that he regardeth not the offering any more, or receiveth it with good will at your hand.
- Yet ye say, Wherefore? Because the LORD hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.
- And did not he make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That he might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.
- For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.
It is evident that God hates divorce and violence against wives. It is his desire that all husbands love and cherish and protect their wives. Godliness begins at home. Let all Christian husbands repent and show piety at home first by dealing lovingly to their wives. Our Lord commands it.
The Fall of Man – Woman and Marriage: Christ and the Church
Finally, Although the creation of Eve from Adam’s rib is an actual event, it also is a foreshadowing of Christ and his Bride, the Church.
Just as Adam was put into a deep sleep – so also Jesus gave his life on the cross for our sins.
Just as the rib was taken from Adam’s side – so also the spear was put in and taken from Christ’s side.
Just as the woman was created on the eighth day – so also Christ rose on the eight day to create the Bride of Christ, the Church.
