The Trinity  – Understanding a Triune God: Part 1 of 5

The Trinity – Understanding a Triune God: Finite Minds – Infinite God

Although our finite minds cannot possibly grasp all the infinite qualities of God we can know those characteristics that God has chosen to reveal to us through his Holy Word…and God has chosen to reveal the trinity through the scriptures, the Holy Bible.

The Trinity – Understanding a Triune God: God reveals himself:

  • Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the heaven and earth.”The Trinity - Understanding a Triune God - Part 1 of 5

Two things are revealed about God in this one simple verse. First, God existed before all created things. he has always existed. Second, God is the creator of all things.

  • Genesis 1:2, “And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”

Genesis verse 2 reveals the trinity, or the three personalities of God; the face of the deep, the spirit of God, and the face of the waters.

I John 5:7 reveals the trinity personalities as the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost.

  • I John 5:7, “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.”

The Trinity – Understanding a Triune God: Three Personalities – One God?

Probably the best explanation can be given by looking at that part of creation that God made in his own image, man himself.

  • Genesis 1:26-27, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, and after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he him.”

Looking at Hebrews 4:12-13, the three parts of man, the soul, the body, and the spirit are revealed.

  • Hebrews 4:12-13, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.”

God has shown the three parts of man as the soul, spirit, and body (joints and morrow). This is confirmed by Genesis 2:7.

  • Genesis 2:7, “And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostril the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

In that verse God shows the body, (“formed of the dust of the ground”), spirit, (“breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”); and soul, (“man became a living soul”).

  • I Thessalonians 5:23, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Understanding a triune God is much easier when we realize we were created as a triune being.

The Trinity – Understanding a Triune God: Conclusion

It is evident that God who is a triune being has created man in his image as a triune being.
