Tragedy of Abel and Cain – Cains Sin

Tragedy of Abel and Cain – God Warns Cain

One of the great tragedies related to Abel and Cain was the Lord warned Cain of his sin, and Cain ignored him.  It’s not an uncommon happening today.  The Bible, God’s word, gives us warning, and we ignore it.  We can learn several important lessons from this tragedy.

  • Genesis 4:6-8, “And the Lord said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is Tragedy of Abel and Cain - Cains Sin: How did Cain Sin?thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.”

It is in these verses that the Lord tells Cain he has sin. The Lord tells Cain to reject sin, but Cain does not.

Tragedy of Abel and Cain: What Was Cain’s Sin?

Cain let evil pride rule him and he killed his brother. How do we know it was pride that led Cain to sin?

  • Proverbs 13:10, “Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.”

There is only one thing that leads to contention and that is pride. The world teaches us every day to have pride. It is time to reject this evil and humble ourselves to God that we might lead a peaceful and fulfilling life.

There are three temptations that lead to all sin: lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.  These three cause all lies, murders, thievery, jealousy, hate, and sins of the flesh.

I John 2:16-17, “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.  And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

Tragedy of Abel and Cain: How is Pride Overcome?

  • Proverbs 22:4, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.”
  • Proverbs 15:33, “The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.”

By humility and fear of the Lord sin can be overcome.

What is fear of the Lord?

  • Proverbs 8:13, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.”

Whose sin should we hate?  Jesus gives us the answer.

  • Matthew 7:1-5, “Judge not, that ye be not judged.  For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.  And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?  Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and , behold, a beam is in thine own eye?   Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then thou shalt see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”

It is evident by the scriptures that we are to hate our own sin.  When we hate our own sin and turn from them and humble ourselves to ask for forgiveness of our sins in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, then God can exalt us by giving us eternal life through our resurrected Lord, Jesus Christ.

  • I John 9-10, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.  If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”
  • Matthew 9:13, “But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy , and not sacrifice:  for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

God is waiting for us to come to him through the precious cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.   Let us humble ourselves to the Lord Jesus Christ and ask forgiveness of our sins that we truly might be blessed.
